Thunder Blazers Betting
At long last, the NBA is back. Last week, the NBA officially voted to move forward with a plan to resurrect the stalled 2019-20 season later this summer in Florida.
22 of the league’s 30 teams will convene at the Walt Disney World complex near Orlando with the goal of finishing the season. The league has tentatively set a target date of July 31 to return to action, with those 22 teams arriving in Florida at some point in the middle of July.
Every team will play eight regular-season games, and the top-eight teams from either conference will advance to the playoffs. One wrinkle the NBA has thrown in is that there may be a mini play-in tournament for the last playoff spots in either conference.
The NBA’s Board of Governors has voted to approve the league’s 22-team format to restart the 2019-2020 season in Orlando, source tells ESPN.

The return of the NBA obviously means the return of NBA betting. Fortunately, those that placed futures bets on the 2019-20 title won’t have to throw away those bet slips just yet. The best NBA betting sites in the industry have updated their odds in light of the league’s decision to proceed with 22 teams. We also have an array of new bets worth checking out.
BetOnline is one of the sites with some new props related to the NBA’s restart. Let’s try to identify some betting value, shall we?
Will Any Team Go Undefeated?
Outcome | Odds at BetOnline |
Yes | +700 |
No | -2000 |
As mentioned, all 22 teams invited to Orlando are slated to play eight regular-season contests. This prop has nothing to do with the postseason, it’s simply asking whether any team will put up a perfect 8-0 record in the run-up to the playoffs.
Reports last week said that every team’s schedule will consist of the next eight games on their original schedules. Obviously, games against any of the eight teams that won’t be invited to play next month will be skipped.
Let’s use the Bucks as an example. If we take the next eight games on their original schedule, Milwaukee will face the Celtics, Heat, Grizzlies, Wizards, Rockets, Wizards again, Mavericks, and Raptors at Disney World. The Bucks have the NBA’s best record at 53-12, but that’s a pretty daunting upcoming schedule.
Milwaukee also already has a comfortable lead over Toronto for the best record in the East. While the Bucks will use the regular-season games as a tune-up for the playoffs, we can’t necessarily expect Giannis Antetokounmpo and co. to go all-out for all eight of the warm-up games. So, it’s pretty unlikely we see the Bucks put up a perfect record in Orlando.
The best team in the West, the Lakers, faces a fairly tough schedule, too. The next eight games on LA’s schedule come against the Rockets, Nuggets, Jazz, Jazz again, Raptors, Wizards, Pacers, and Kings. That set of opponents isn’t quite as daunting as Milwaukee’s, but it would still be a surprise to see the Lake Show run the table.
Desperation could be a factor, of course. Teams like the Kings and Wizards are having to try and quickly make up ground just to get into the postseason. However, both of those teams are also well under .500. All things considered, a team reeling off eight straight wins isn’t impossible, but it’s incredibly unlikely.
The Bet: No (-2000)
Will Any Team Go Winless?
Outcome | Odds at BetOnline |
Yes | +700 |
No | -2000 |
All 22 teams set to relaunch the season in Orlando are in the playoff hunt. While some are obviously far better than others, the true dregs of the league won’t be present. So, the days of picking on also-rans like the Knicks, Warriors, and Cavs are over, for now.
The Wizards and Suns are the worst teams that will be invited back. Washington is 24-40 on the year, while Phoenix is 26-39. Both teams have very slim chances of mounting a charge to the playoffs, but they’re still mathematically alive in the race.

The Wizards’ upcoming schedule will likely feature the Celtics, Thunder, 76ers, Nets, Bucks, Celtics again, Suns, and Bucks again. Washington getting to face Brooklyn and Phoenix may help them avoid a winless tenure in Orlando. The Suns will likely face the Mavs, Clippers, Mavs again, Pacers, Wizards, 76ers, Heat, and Thunder.
The Wiz are just 6-18 against teams with winning records this season, while the Suns are even worse (7-21).
Again, I don’t think it’s likely that any team gets shut out on their trip to Florida. That said, I think it’s more realistic than a team going unbeaten. As a result, I don’t mind taking a small flier bet on “yes” at the current +700 odds. It’s not a particularly high-percentage bet, but anything is possible, right?
The Bet: Yes (+700)
Will There Be An Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament?
Outcome | Odds at BetOnline |
Yes | +800 |
No | -2500 |
As of now, the Wizards are the only Eastern Conference team currently on the outside looking in on the playoff picture among those returning to action. The league is bringing nine East teams back along with 13 from the more competitive Western Conference.
In order for there to be a play-in tourney, the team in ninth place will have to be within four games of the No. 8 team in the standings. As of now, Washington is 5.5 games behind Orlando for the last playoff spot in the conference. Brooklyn, though, is just six games clear of the Wizards.
Washington not having any games against the Magic likely won’t help their chances of catching up. The Magic also seem to have one of the more favorable schedules; Orlando will likely face Sacramento, Brooklyn, Indiana, Brooklyn again, New Orleans, Boston, Philly, and Boston again after the restart. That’s just two games against Western Conference teams, and both of those teams aren’t even playoff teams as things stand today.
I like the Magic’s chances of leapfrogging the Nets, who have to face the Clippers twice in addition to their two head-to-head games with Orlando. It won’t be impossible for the Wizards to close to within less than four games of the Nets, but the short schedule makes that a very tall order.
As is the case with the last prop, I can see the merit to putting a small bet on “yes” here given the +800 odds, but a play-in tourney is far more likely out West.
The Bet: No (-2500)
Will There Be A Western Conference Play-In Tournament?
Outcome | Odds at BetOnline |
Yes | -1000 |
No | +550 |
As mentioned, things are way more jumbled in the West. The Grizzlies are clinging to the final playoff spot with a handful of teams nipping at their heels. Portland, Sacramento, and New Orleans are all 3.5 games behind Memphis as of now. The Spurs are four games back, while the Suns are six out.
so you're telling me there's a chance? pic.twitter.com/RaeIkU0DPm
— Phoenix Suns (@Suns) June 4, 2020
With so many teams in a tightly-packed race, the Grizzlies are very unlikely to separate themselves from the pack over the course of eight games. Memphis will benefit from the return of Jaren Jackson Jr., but the schedule will give their competitors a chance to make up ground. As things stand now, it looks like the Grizzlies will play the Blazers, Spurs, and Pelicans (twice) during their time in Orlando.
The play-in tourney idea was clearly a move designed by the NBA to help make the playoff race more interesting. Considering three teams already meet the criteria of being within four games of the No. 8 team, a play-in tourney in the West looks like a foregone conclusion.
The Bet: Yes (-1000)
Who Will Be The No. 8 Seed In The West?
Team | Odds at BetOnline |
Grizzlies | -190 |
Trail Blazers | +275 |
Pelicans | +325 |
Kings | +1200 |
Spurs | +1800 |
Suns | +15000 |
Mavericks | +20000 |
First off, we can go ahead and write off three teams right away. Those would be Dallas (+20000), San Antonio (+1800), and Phoenix (+15000). Dallas is currently the No. 7 seed, and they’re seven games ahead of Memphis in the standings. It’s mathematically possible for the Grizz to catch the Mavs, but that ain’t happening. The Mavericks would have to crater while the Grizzlies run the table.
The Suns have to make up six games in the span of eight games, which is too much to ask. Phoenix is essentially getting invited back for scheduling purposes. As for San Antonio, the Spurs would have to leapfrog three other teams in the standings just to get into ninth. Oh, and the team just announced that star forward LaMarcus Aldridge won’t play in Orlando after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Memphis is in the driver’s seat here with a 3.5-game lead over their most serious challengers. The play-in format would also mean that the team at No. 8 would have to beat the No. 9 team just once in order to secure the playoff spot. The No. 9 seed would have to beat the eighth seed twice in a row. The Grizzlies are a very good bet to finish the regular season eighth, and they have the inside track to securing that spot via the play-in format, too.
The NBA will utilize win percentage to break ties after the first eight games in Orlando, giving the Blazers a slight advantage. https://t.co/0NbVThx4XM

If you want value, Portland stands out at +275. The Blazers are the most experienced team among those vying for a postseason spot. A quirk in the NBA’s tiebreaker format also gives Portland an advantage. The league is going to seed teams based on winning percentage. As things stand now, the Blazers have a slightly higher winning percentage than the teams they’re virtually tied with in the standings (New Orleans and Sacramento). That’s because the Blazers have played two fewer games. The Blazers are 29-37, while the Pels and Kings are both 28-36. Portland’s in percentage (.439) is slightly better than New Orleans’ or Sacramento’s (.438).
Thunder Blazers Betting Game
Because the Blazers have an inside track at claiming the ninth seed via tiebreaker, I think Portland is your best value bet to wind up leapfrogging the Grizzlies and grabbing that last playoff position at +275.
